Financial Aid

FAFSA Filing Options

  • Apply online at www.FAFSA.ed.gov
    (Recommended) or **
  • Complete a PDF FAFSA
    (Note: PDF FAFSA's must be mailed for processing) or
  • Request a paper FAFSA by calling the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1.800.4-FED-AID (800.433.3243) or 1.319.337.5665. If you are hearing impaired, please contact the TTY line at 1.800.730.8913.

** If you plan on filing online, you must have a PIN # for yourself and your parent
(if dependent) to sign your application.

Click on "PIN SITE" near the top of the page or go to www.pin.ed.gov to apply for a PIN #. You will need to enter your personal information and submit your PIN application. Allow four hours for PIN instructions to be sent via email.

GRANTS

Pell
Maximum is $1733 per quarter to eligible students. All students may apply by submitting the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) for the current year. You may pick up an application at your high school guidance office or by contacting Newport Business Institute at 724.339.0455. The application may also be filed on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

PHEAA
Maximum is $1,334 per quarter to eligible students. For more information, please contact Newport Business Institute at 724.339.0455 or the PHEAA Grant Division at 1.800.692.7392. You may also visit the PHEAA web site at www.pheaa.org. When you complete the FAFSA, you are actually applying for the PHEAA grant also.

DEADLINE FOR PENNSYLVANIA STATE GRANT
FOR THE 2009-2010 AWARD YEARS

Students who received a Pennsylvania State Grant disbursement for the 2009-10 award years must submit the FAFSA before May 1, 2009.

Students who did not receive any disbursement of state grant funds for the 2009-10 award years must submit the FAFSA before August 1, 2009.

Newport recommends that you complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon after January 1, 2009 as possible.

LOANS

Federal Family Education Loans

Subsidized - This low interest loan of up to $3,500 for the first academic year and up to $4,500 for the second academic year is available to qualified students enrolled in eligible programs. NOTE: Repayment does not begin until six months after your last day of attendance and may be spread over a period as long as ten years.

Unsubsidized - An additional $4,000 per year is available to independent students and an additional $2,000 per year is available to independent students. Note: Repayment does not begin until six months after your last day of attendance and may be spread over a period as long as ten years.

Parent Loans (PLUS) – Parents of dependent undergraduate students may borrow under this program. Applications may be requested by calling AES/PHEAA at 1.800.692.7392 or may be picked up at Newport Business Institute. Parents also have the convenience of applying from their own computer at www.aessuccess.org, 24 hours a day.

Student Assistance Loans from other states - Similar to PHEAA loans, these loans are available to qualified out-of-state students through their home states' higher education agencies.

FEDERAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS

G.I. Bill
Veterans eligible for education and training under Title 38 of the United States Code are entitled to a legislatively set monthly allowance from the Veterans Administration while attending the school in an approved full-time program of study.

War Orphans Educational Assistance
This program provides financial aid for the education of sons and daughters of veterans who died during, or as a result of, active service.  Benefits are similar to these of the G.I. Bill, Dependents of disabled or deceased veterans my also be eligible for this program.

Vocational Rehabilitation for Veterans
Veterans disabled during wartime and under certain peacetime service may be eligible for educational benefits and training.

Other State and Federal Programs
Financial assistance may be available through such government programs as Workforce Investment Act (WIA), Bureau of Indian Affairs (for America Indian Youth), State Office of Vocational Rehabilitation and Training Rehabilitation (TRA).

OTHER FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

Other financial aid may be available to you if you fall into any of the following categories:

  • Displaced Worker
  • Laid Off From Job
  • Physically Challenged
  • Economically Disadvantaged
  • Single Parent
